Le livre donne également la parole à ses proches : Samba Gadjigo, son biographe et ami, et Haja Maïmouna Niang fondatrice de Daaray Sembène, qui perpétue l’héritage de l’auteur à travers l’éducation et la création contemporaine. Deux entretiens inédits, l’un avec Sembène Ousmane, l’autre avec Wole Soyinka, prix Nobel de littérature, concluent cet hommage, offrant une double perspective sur l’engagement intellectuel et sur l’art comme force de transformation du monde. Researchers, writers, filmmakers, and witnesses pay tribute to Sembène Ousmane (1923-2007), the « father of African cinema, » a novelist and committed intellectual for whom art was an instrument of lucidity and resistance.
This collection explores the political and aesthetic force of his films, the literary power of his novels, and the lasting influence of his work on several generations. From « God’s Bits of Wood » to « Guelwaar, » including « The Black Docker » and « O Country, My Beautiful People! », the contributors explore the relevance of a body of work rooted in Africa and open to the world.
The book also gives voice to his close friends: Samba Gadjigo, his biographer and friend, and Haja Maïmouna Niang, founder of Daaray Sembène, which perpetuates the author’s legacy through education and contemporary art.
Two previously unpublished interviews, one with Sembène Ousmane,
the other with Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate in Literature,
